My Review of the Breville
800JEXL Juice Fountain Elite Juice Extractor
I'm sure you've probably seen those T.V. infomercials where a well-known celebrity or
chef demonstrates a juice machine. I saw one recently
and was intrigued as I watched the presenter put all kinds of different fruits and vegetables into the chute,
and saw a gush of fresh juice come pouring out of the spout. The
juice looked absolutely delicious! I wanted one! I was just about
ready to order when…
My rational thought returned
before I could get out my credit card and make the call!
Now, admittedly, I’m not one who makes impulse buys
from infomercial ads on T.V. But this product really caught my
interest this time. The juice machine I saw on T.V. looked like a good one to me, but honestly, I didn’t really know anything about juicer machines so how was I to know
whether it was a good product or not?
I was determined to learn
more.
I decided to do some online
research to check out what’s on the market. I like to get my
information together, and weigh all the different factors so I can decide for myself what product gives the best
“bang for the buck.”
After reading several
reviews, descriptions, and comparisons of various juicers, I soon discovered that the juicer I saw on T.V. was
o.k., and generally did what it claimed to do. But I found several others
that were even better, and my research unexpectedly led me to a completely different brand of juicer that seemed
to be at the top of its class.
This manufacturer is Breville, a name I was unfamiliar
with. I learned that Breville has been around for many years and is a leading maker of
small appliances, including several different models of juice extractor machines. One model in particular
caught my eye and appeared to be exactly what I was looking for – the Breville 800JEXL Juice Fountain Elite 1000-Watt Juice Extractor. I am going to give
you some reasons why a think this juice machine is one of the best on the market at any price.
Here are some things you should consider when looking for a
juicer:
-
Quality of Juice
-
How fast it can make juice.
-
The size of the feed tube
-
How much juice it extracts/how dry is the
pulp
-
How loud it is
-
Kinds of produce it can juice
-
How easy it is to clean
-
How hard it is to assemble and
disassemble.
-
Quality of construction
-
Length of Warranty
Let’s look at these more closely,
one-by-one.
How fast it can make juice?
If you’re like most people, you have a very busy life, and
you probably don’t want to spend too much time waiting on your machine to do its
thing. A juicer should be able to extract juice quickly and
efficiently and not easily jam or plug up. You need a juicer that
will be a time saver, not a time-waster.
However, the speed of
extraction does not necessarily correlate to the number of rpms (rotations per minute). For example, a so-called
“slow juicer” with very low rpms may be just as quick at extracting juice as a high rpm
device. Much of it depends on the design and power of the device.
So how does the
Breville 800JEXL Juice Fountain stack up?
Well, it’s fast...it’s very fast! Here’s why:
Inside each Breville 800JEXL Juice Fountain you’ll find a powerful two-speed 1000 watt, 1-1/3 horsepower
motor. In high-speed mode the juicer spins the cutting disc at a blazing fast 13,000
RPMs. This is about 3 times faster than most of the other juicers machines on the
market.
High speed is good for
harder fruits and vegetables such as apples, beets and carrots. At this speed, the Breville JEXL Juice Fountain
can make an eight ounce glass of juice from whole apples in less than five seconds. A liter of juice can
be extracted in one minute or less.
The low speed mode spins at a relatively quiet 6500 rpms, which
is still fast compared to competitor juicers. Low speed is
perfect for softer fruits such as melons, and oranges, and leafy green vegetables such kale and
spinach.
The size of the feeding
tube
Another factor that
affects how fast you can make juice is the size of the tube for feeding the produce into the
juicer.
The Breville has a very large 3 inch wide tube that can accept
whole vegetables and fruit without having to cut them into smaller pieces. The patented design centers the
feed tube directly over the cutter, providing the strength to process large quantities of fruit and
vegetables instantly.
It’s huge when compared to
most other juice extractors, and it’s a real time saver. If you've ever had
the misfortune of using a juicer with a small tube, you have some idea of how long it takes to cut up your
produce small enough to fit in the tube.
You may still need to cut
large produce, but you won’t have to cut it as small as you would with most other types of
juicers.
How Much Juice Does it Extract/How Dry is the
Pulp?
The Breville juicer uses centrifugal force to efficiently squeeze out nearly every last drop
of juice. This results in a fibrous pulp that is extremely dry.
Here’s how it works in a nutshell. The high speed motor
spins the titanium cutting disc at 13000 rpms and flings the pulp against the stainless
steel micro-mesh filter at high velocity to extract as much of the juice as possible. The juice goes through
the stainless steel micromesh filter, into the froth separator and then the juice
container. The pulp is separated from the juice and enters the pulp bin.
How does this benefit you the user? It saves you
money! The high extraction efficiency saves you money by minimizing
product waste and squeezing as much as possible out of your fruit and vegetables.
How Loud Is It?
One disadvantage of most centrifugal juicers is that they can be
pretty noisy. In promotional material, the JEXL 800 Juice Fountain is described as “whisper quiet” but I believe many people will find
it somewhat louder than a whisper. However, by
centrifugal standards, the Breville is not overly loud, and some people say it is reasonably quiet, especially
at the low speed setting
Kinds of produce it can juice
The Breville can juice
nearly every kind of fruit and vegetables you put into it. Soft and hard fruit,
all kinds of vegetables, and leafy greens prove to be no problem, and can be juiced
easily.
For best results in juicing some leafy greens, herbs, sprouts,
and wheatgrass, you can wrap them together into a tight bundle or juice them in the middle of a combination
of other ingredients on low speed.
When juicing both soft and hard textured produce at the same
time, first juice the softer textured ingredients on low speed, then use the high speed setting for the
harder ingredients.
Quality of the Juice
The consensus of most users is that the quality of juice is very
good! Some users reported that the juice tastes as good as or better than that from juice
bars. Because the Breville extracts juice so efficiently, there is very little pulp in the
juice. Some users report some froth or foam, but it didn’t seem to be a big problem for most
people. Skimming it off the top or stirring the froth into the juice seems to get rid of it
quickly
How Easy is it to Disassemble and
Clean?
Users report that
disassembling the unit after juicing is a snap. There are no screws to mess
with, and excluding the stainless steel base, only a few pieces, which can be taken apart quickly for easy
washing. Washable parts include the filter bowl, micromesh filter basket, the top juicer cover,
pulp container and juice pitcher.
Cleaning up is simple, quick
and easy. Breville has done a great job designing parts with fewer food traps so you can hand wash
the parts in hot soapy water in just a few minutes.
If you don’t feel like washing it by hand – no
problem! All parts (except for the electrical base) can be washed safely in the top rack of
the dishwasher. One note on this: although parts are
dishwasher safe, Breville recommends cleaning the micromesh filter by hand with the supplied
brush.
Of course, the main electrical base should not be immersed in
water and should only be cleaned by hand with a sponge or cloth.
What’s the benefit for
you? A very fast hassle-free cleanup that saves you time and
eliminates frustration.

Complaints
As you might expect from any best selling product, there are a
few complaints from users. The relatively
few complaints were varied and didn’t center on any one thing. Some thought the
machine was too big, bulky or heavy; others felt it was too loud. A few complained that
it was hard to clean, the pulp was too wet, or it was too messy. Others complained about
the customer service.
Overall though, the reviews were overwhelming positive, and far
outweighed the few negative reviews. For example, for every
person who thought the juicer was too big, there were many others who felt the size was just about right for
a tabletop appliance. And those who complained of the noise were far outnumbered by consumers who thought
it was quieter than competitor centrifugal juicers models.
Where can you buy the Breville Juice Fountain
Elite?
The Breville Juicer is available from many online retailers, but
I’ve found that Amazon.com consistently has the lowest price. When you consider
the free “Super Saver Shipping” option, or the free 2nd Day shipping available to Prime
